Humanismo Movimiento intelectual que se desarrolla durante el Renacimiento, en concreto durante el siglo XV. Se caracteriza por la revalorización de la dignidad del hombre y enlaza con la cultura de la antigüedad clásica. El humanismo es el aspecto filosófico y literario del Renacimiento. Ambos tienen su origen en Italia, donde confluyen dos factores fundamentales: unas condiciones socioeconómicas óptimas y la presencia del legado cultural grecorromano. El pensador humanista no se limita al estudio de la teología como en los siglos precedentes, sino que se introduce en el estudio de las ciencias humanas, y en especial de las lenguas clásicas, el latín y el griego. Busca en las fuentes de la Antigüedad una nueva forma de pensamiento, resucitando el idealismo platónico frente al aristotelismo escolástico. El estudio de las lenguas clásicas determina grandes progresos en la lingüística, además de sacar a la luz temas y obras prácticamente olvidadas por la historia del pensamiento. Con ello los humanistas buscan el derecho del hombre a realizarse en el mundo y la confianza en la capacidad de su inteligencia.
La invención de la imprenta hacia el año 1448 supuso uno de los grandes logros para esta corriente; con la imprenta los escritos de los humanistas llegaron a todos los territorios de Europa. Es precisamente fuera de Italia donde surge la figura más impresionante de la cultura humanista, Erasmo de Rotterdam. Al lado de Erasmo aparecen figuras de la talla de Tomás Moro en Inglaterra, autor de Utopia, o de Antonio de Nebrija y Juan Luis Vives en España, así como Guillermo Budé en Francia.
